Generac Power Systems – Work with the leader in the power industry! Our Corporate Headquarters in Waukesha, WI is seeking a passionate, experienced Packaging Engineer to expand on our base packaging program and take it to the next level!



This position will be responsible for leading the design, test, and implementation of packaging designs across the company product lines including consumer, commercial and industrial, and mobile products.  The role also includes an emphasis on continuous improvement activities to improve existing packaging designs for better performance and lower cost.


This department formed in the last five years as Generac grew and expanded; we have a great base and are looking forward to building on that with new initiatives and expanded emphasis.  The role reports to the VP of Engineering.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
  • Identify and implement cost savings initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation & storage.
  • Continue and expand the development of a base of test standards to be used as guidelines when developing packaging solutions for our products.
  • Write comprehensive test plans for specific products that will insure the packaging will meet all customer CTQs and packaging design specifications.
  • Utilize a newly expanded Packaging Lab to qualify material and perform prototyping.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely and cost effective solutions. 
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Work closely with cross functional teams including global sourcing, distribution management and third party packaging suppliers to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, line efficiency, standardization, supply assurance and compliance to global requirements.
  • Evaluate packaging and transporting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Provide packaging technical direction to manufacturing and operations. 


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • 3 – 5 years of work experience in Mechanical Engineering specific to equipment production in consumer or industrial manufacturing.
  • Applies engineering knowledge to improve products or services;
  • Able to solve moderate to complex engineering problems
  • Good decision-making skills
  • Technical skills to include 3D Modeling (Creo or Solidworks) and 2D (AutoCad)
  • MS Excel, MS Word
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills
  • 10 – 20% travel required primarily in the US, occasional international travel is possible

Additional Qualifications:

  • Familiar with packaging materials such as corrugated, EPS foam, & wooden crates and must be able to identify proper use depending on product type.
  • Understand industry standards for packaging design validation such as ISO, ASTM, and ISTA standards.
  • Knowledge of drafting and specification standards to create production-ready documentation.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques for packaging designs.
  • Knowledge of the best practices and innovations in materials, equipment and processes required in the production of consumer packaging.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to work cross-functionally to project manage NPI projects


Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPP/“Certified Packaging Professional” issued by the Institute of Packaging Professionals
  • Proficient with CAPE and Truckfill software
  • Demonstrated ability in process improvement and metric development


Physical Demands:   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls.  The employee is regularly required to stand and walk.  On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders.  The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
