Overview

 

Generac Power Systems – Work with the leader in the power industry!  Our Corporate HQ in Waukesha, WI, is seeking a Senior Design Engineer for our Transfer Switch team.

 

The Senior Engineer will design, ground up, new transfer switches.  Within our recently updated corporate headquarters, we have resources to tool, print, machine, assemble and test our new designs all under one roof.  This position requires someone who also enjoys working with others and is hands-on.  It requires a high level of creativity and independence.  Transfer switches range in size from 50 Amps to several thousand amps.  Transfer Switches are engineered and assembled at Generac’s Wisconsin facilities.

 

This position reports to the Director Engineering - Transfer Switches.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, design and assist assembly and test of new transfer switch contactor designs.
  • Provide Mechanical Engineering: Cassette design, material selection, energy source requirements via motor/solenoid/spring.
  • Utilize Creo to model new cassette designs.
  • Understand electrical requirements required to direct, split and interrupt arcs.
  • Work with transfer switch team to develop and improve cassette iterations from concept to production.
  • Conduct Risk Assessments, FMEA/DFMEA and Design Reviews.
  • Collaborate with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers and product specialists to optimize moderately complex designs for manufacturability. 
  • Act as a resource to mentor and teach less experienced engineers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering discipline.
  • 5 - 10 years of relevant work experience, of which 3 or more years of experience is in electrical equipment development.
  • Applies engineering knowledge and experience to improve products, services and processes;
  • Ability to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Technical skills to include 3D modeling (ProE/Creo);
  • MS Excel and MS Word.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Experience with plastics.

Additional Skills Preferred:

  • 5 or more years of experience with CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs and produce detailed engineering drawings. 
  • Experience with electrical switching products.
  • Knowledge and experience with plastics, extrusions, gears.
  • Understanding of physical phenomena related to plasma and arc extinction.
  • Understanding of physical forces exerted due to high magnetic forces
  • Understanding of various phenomena which impact electrical designs:  Skin effect, induction, eddy currents, etc

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
