Generac Power Systems – Work with the leader in the power industry! Our corporate headquarters in Waukesha, WI is seeking a Staff Engineer - Embedded Firmware for our Advance Commercial Technology Team.


The Staff Embedded Firmware Engineer: Advance Commercial Technology will be involved in the early evaluation and development of new technologies that support our diverse product line.  The Staff Embedded Firmware Engineer will create and evaluate new control algorithms, embedded software and create software specifications to support the early evaluation, development, design and validation processes. This person will create technology roadmaps and contribute to the development of our future product strategies. 


This position reports to the Director of Engineering.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Develop, design and evaluate new technologies and identify new applications for existing technologies. 
  • Create new algorithms, embedded software, software specifications and testing specifications to support the early evaluation, development, design and validation process.
  • Create PC based testing tools.
  • Create and maintain technology roadmaps.
  • Contribute to the development of our future product roadmaps and strategies
  • Conduct Risk Assessments, FMEA/DFMEA and Design Reviews;
  • Support product development plans (schedule, product cost, meeting design inputs)
  • Collaborate with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers and product specialists to optimize complex and advanced designs for manufacturability. 
  • Mentor and teach less experienced engineers
  • Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 10 + years of relevant work experience.
  • Ability to apply engineering knowledge and experience to improve products, services and processes.
  • Ability to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Real-time firmware experience using microcontrollers and real time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Knowledge of microprocessor hardware interfacing techniques, such as IIC, SPIbus, EEprom, Flash, RS232/485, analog interfaces, etc.
  • Knowledge of control systems using PID loops.
  • Use and understanding of interrupt structures.
  • Experience using debugging tools such as ICE.
  • Experience with the following embedded Firmware, Object Oriented languages: C, C++, C#, Java.
  • MS Excel, MS Word;
  • Excellent oral and written communication.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or related discipline.
  • Experience with power generation products.
  • Experience in design of industrial/automotive electronic control systems and assemblies.
  • Experience with TI-RTOS, Freescale PowerPC and/or Microchip PIC microcontrollers
  • Communication protocol/ hardware interface knowledge, such as RS232, RS485, CAN, Ethernet, USB, SPI, I2C, Flash, EEPROM, ADC/DAC, WiFi/Bluetooth.
  • Experience with Agile software development practices and tools

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
